What’s New for Fall 2010?
August 23, 2010 | Getting Started, Library Services & Resources, Need Assistance?, Personnel, Technical Assistance, Technology | Leave a Comment
We’re in the 2nd week of Fall 2010 and there have been some changes as well as additions for you all to be aware of.
- The GALILEO password has changed and will be in effect until January 5, 2011. Obtain the GALILEO password via your library account. You’ll need a PIN. For more information go to http://gilexpress.usg.edu/PIN_FAQ.html.
- Each student has been allocated $70 for printing. This is not a new cost. In the past, students were allowed unlimited b/w printing but had to pay for color printing in the library. The University has placed a limit on the number of pages allowed for printing now. This limit is based on your $70 tech fee. If you print all b/w pages, you can print up to 700 pages ($0.10/page) for the entire semester. However, this may vary if you also print in color ($0.50/page). The amount for each print job will be deducted from your $70 allocation. This will occur regardless of where you print from (e.g., library, CIT, COBA, COE, Union, etc). If you use your allocation before the end of the semester and feel you need an extension you may submit an appeal with the IT Help Desk (912-478-5429 or ithelpdesk@georgiasouthern.edu).
- Reference Text Messaging via Twitter and cell phones is now available For more information on how to text us go to http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/libref/imref.html.
- You may follow us on Twitter by searching for zachshenderson.
- You may become a Fan of the library on Facebook by joining our Fan Page
- Workshops are available. We will teach you library research skills and computer software, tips, and tricks.
- Looking for online tutorials on how to conduct research? COE COBA CIT CLASS COPH COST
- Want to connect to databases, journal or journal articles from within GeorgiaView?
- I am available via Skype for reference assistance. Add me as a contact. Search for ‘Sonya Shepherd’ without the quotation marks and select the result where location is ‘ United States, Statesboro’.
- The Presentation Practice Room, DVD/VHS Viewing Room, and equipment (e.g., laptops, web cams, digital camera, video camcorders, projectors) are available for checkout.
Good luck this semester! If you have a question contact us – (912) 478-7820, askzach@georgiasouthern.edu, http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/libref/imref.html, or learningcommons@georgiasouthern.edu.

new GALILEO Password
June 9, 2010 | Library Services & Resources, Need Assistance? | 1 Comment
The GALILEO password changes on June 15, 2010. The new password will be valid until August 16, 2010. To get the password, go to the library catalog (http://gil.georgiasouthern.edu) and click on “Your Account.” After you log in using your Eagle ID number, PIN (http://gilexpress.usg.edu/PIN_FAQ.html), and your last name, click the request button at the top of the screen to get the password. For more detailed instructions see http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/forms/galpass.html. Remember, passwords must be entered in all lowercase characters. ONLY Georgia Southern faculty, staff and students may have this password.
Do not give this password to anyone who is not a student at Georgia Southern or employed by the University. Please do not post this password on publicly accessible web sites. If you give this password to your students, please ask them not to share it with anyone else.
GALILEO is a service of the University System of Georgia. The 400+ databases available through GALILEO may be reached from the GALILEO homepage (http://www.galileo.usg.edu). The password allows you to have access to most of the databases when you are not on campus.
The GALILEO password also gives users working from home or other off campus locations access to the databases Georgia Southern subscribes to directly. See http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/forms/galpass.html for more
information.

Do you Skype? Do you need help with your research? Well… help is available. Starting now, COE faculty and students are able to skpe with their COE librarian – me. Look for me using my name ‘Sonya Shepherd’. I have not set up any specific times for doing this. If it becomes necessary to set up times I will but right now this is a trial to see how it works. See you online…

Intergeneration Day Celebration — A Success!
October 19, 2009 | Library Services & Resources, Technology | Leave a Comment
Members of Lambda Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. were asked to assist Sonya Shepherd, Learning Commons Director, by providing free tutorials to the Statesboro community and GSU parents on how to scan pictures, and create Facebook and Twitter accounts. We had approximately 15 participants scattered throughout the day. All of which were excited and happy we were providing this service.
The tutorials were more extensive than what we imagined them to be. They averaged about 2 hours per person or group of two. Participants wanted detailed assistance on how to use their printer/scanner at home so they can upload and save pictures to jump drives. They wanted to know how to save pictures and other information to jump drives. They also wanted to know more about how to set their privacy settings in Facebook. Some wanted to know how to save their pictures from their digital cameras onto their computers. A few participants already had Facebook and/or Twitter accounts but wanted to know what all they could do with them.
I want to thank my colleagues Cynthia, Peggy E, and Mary Margaret for helping me to plan and publicize our Intergeneration Day Celebration event. I also want to thank my undergraduate sorors for assisting us throughout the day.
We hope to offer similar workshops to the community in the future. Please stay tuned…
