Members of Lambda Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. were asked to assist Sonya Shepherd, Learning Commons Director, by providing free tutorials to the Statesboro community and GSU parents on how to scan pictures, and create Facebook and Twitter accounts. We had approximately 15 participants scattered throughout the day. All of which were excited and happy we were providing this service.
The tutorials were more extensive than what we imagined them to be. They averaged about 2 hours per person or group of two. Participants wanted detailed assistance on how to use their printer/scanner at home so they can upload and save pictures to jump drives. They wanted to know how to save pictures and other information to jump drives. They also wanted to know more about how to set their privacy settings in Facebook. Some wanted to know how to save their pictures from their digital cameras onto their computers. A few participants already had Facebook and/or Twitter accounts but wanted to know what all they could do with them.
I want to thank my colleagues Cynthia, Peggy E, and Mary Margaret for helping me to plan and publicize our Intergeneration Day Celebration event. I also want to thank my undergraduate sorors for assisting us throughout the day.
We hope to offer similar workshops to the community in the future. Please stay tuned…

Dear COE Faculty,

If you’re using materials that will be placed on reserves or made available via GeorgiaView or a web page, please make sure that you have checked the criteria for fair use as defined by the University System of Georgia. For more information, go to http://www.usg.edu/copyright/documents/fair_use_checklist.pdf. Another way to make sure copyright is not violated is to link directly to an article or journal via GALILEO – see Linking Tools for more information.

Thanks to funding from the College of Education and feedback from the trials, there are some new databases in GALILEO:  the Children’s Core Collection; the IGI InfoSci Book & Reference Collection; and 3 Cabell’s Directories of Publishing Opportunities:  Educational Curriculum & Methods; Educational Psychology & Administration; and Education Technology & Library Science.  Their funding has also added more education e-books to our Ebrary and NetLibrary accounts.
Children’s Core Collection (4 simultaneous users allowed) is the online version of Children’s Catalog, which is “a selective annotated list of fiction and nonfiction books and magazines for children from preschool through sixth grade, along with review sources and other professional aids for children’s librarians and school media specialists.”
IGI offers mainly information technology e-books, in full text with perpetual access.  The IGI books currently included in the database, which are also listed individually in the OPAC, are:
  1. Encyclopedia of Data Warehousing and Mining
  2. Encyclopedia of Multimedia Technology and Networking
  3. Handbook of Research on New Media Literacy at the K-12 Level: Issues and Challenges
  4. Online and Distance Learning: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications
  5. Student Plagiarism in an Online World: Problems and Solutions
